Superbad
When looking at the main characters in the movie, it is easy to realize there cannot be a name to describe Seth, Evan, and Fogell better than Superbad. The name is a glaringly obvious sarcastic remark towards the boys' behavior. These children are frankly, just a bunch of losers, and they want to escape the poor social situation they are in by doing something bad. They want to purchase alcohol because it will make them more appealing and impressive to girls than they actually are. Unfortunately, not only does the purchasing of alcohol turn out to be a much greater ordeal than they expected, but they simply are very awkward and uncool. From the way that they talk to members of the opposite sex, to the things that they do (namely odd things such as Seth's obsession with the drawing of male genitalia) they clearly are not cut out to be sexually active like they want to be. Social status is mostly predetermined by the social status of one's parents and childhood friends, and climbing a social ladder is one of the most challenging parts of living in a society. Especially in high school, where popularity and social status proves to effectively strip the less popular kids of various permissions. Anyways, seeing that no individual can match the amount of cringe produced by these boys and that almost anyone is more socially well-off than them, superiority is very present throughout the movie. Additionally, the suddenly violent occurrences make the movie even more hilarious and very worth watching. This movie successfully turns a very awkward and difficult time period into a killer comedy.
I forgot about his obsession with drawing male genitals--just a great coda to the discussion of the phallus. Do you see any parallels to the article?
ReplyDeleteI liked how you mentioned the title as being a sarcastic remark in itself towards the boys behavior. You made some very good points about how the superiority theory is seen in the film because no one can match how awkward they are.
