The Big Lebowski

The Big Lebowski is a film that I came into expecting a lot out of. Luckily, I was not let down, as the movie proved to be absolutely hysterical. To sum it up, I got to watch a man whose life that was already in shambles completely crumble under the most outrageous of circumstances for two hours. If anyone is a testament to Murphy's Law, "what can go wrong will go wrong," it is most definitely Jeffery "The Dude" Lebowski. Almost everything that happened was due to other people being difficult and the Dude usually had no control over it. What makes the situation particularly amusing is that the Dude is known for his very casual, laid back personality, and the relaxation that he desires is exactly the opposite of what he gets. Also, all three theories are supported very well by the film. The superiority theory is supported most strongly as the audience observes the Dude's wild escapades and the ridiculous amount of hardship that he endures. No matter who you are, there is no way you can possibly be more unlucky than the Dude. The incongruity theory is supported by the very random characters and odd events that occur, such as the German Nihilists or Jesus. The relief theory is supported because subjects such as pedophilia, sex, and racial stereotyping are discussed in a comedic manner to relieve tension about such topics. For a film that was produced twenty years ago, The Big Lebowski does a spectacular job portraying people with very real, relatable characteristics, such as the stuck up millionaire, the frustrating friend that would rather be technically correct than be happy, and the chill dude who always likes to take everything easy.

  1. Good job going through each theory and explaining how they are seen throughout the movie!
