Vine, Demetrius Harmon, and Angelo Zeigler

Now, between all the various forms of video entertainment available on the Internet, Vine certainly was never my first pick. When Vine was around, I usually tended to use YouTube or Twitch to view the content I wished to see. That being said, it is still evident that with the way Vine was created, it was frequently the birthplace of comedic gems. Vine was very accessible and easy to use, as opposed to most other sites where adequate content creation requires decent computer specs, recording equipment, impeccable editing skills, and up to several hours to upload and render just a single video. Even though Vine has ceased to exist, two former Vine creators have continued their careers on YouTube and Twitter. Demetrius Harmon and Angelo Zeigler take existing ideas and attempt to make the these ideas their own in a very unique manner. Such themes are usually regular occurrences or historical events that are considered to be common knowledge, and their work is quite transformative. Their sense of humor in their vines is very random, sometimes requiring them to act out several different characters over the course of just a few seconds to create dialogue. Though some folks may consider some of their shorts to be offensive, it is made clear that the Vines are not personal attacks and are by nature whimsical, so they are just mere benign violation. And despite Vine being dead, tens of hours of footage that belongs to Harmon and Zeigler has been re-uploaded to YouTube. Between the old Vine fanbase, YouTube, and Twitter, these two men have amassed over a million followers that continue to support them. Their brilliance and wit is truly something that not many others are capable of matching.

  1. I wonder if there's a sense in which Vines are like an addiction--they provide a quick hit of novelty and surprise, so that they are almost like a way to harness the pure thrill of novelty without having to follow through on all the content. You could waste hours on the site even though each video was 6 seconds long, just as a quick high can take over someone's life.
