What We Do in the Shadows

Before I had seen this movie, I had no idea what to expect. I have seen plenty of comedies, but never a spoof, and I was never really in on vampires and the supernatural. I was not expecting anything bad, just something rather forgettable. When I rented the movie, I was not expecting a bunch of quirky vampires doing weird and hilarious things in front of a documentary filming crew. Everything about the film is so over the top and so many purely outrageous acts are performed, from Petyr's reclusive and antisocial behaviors, to the needlessly graphic and bloody scenarios, to how shockingly normal Stu is and how stoic he when it comes to harrowing situations. Every character is developed on solely for the purpose of comedy. A perfect example of this would be how the Beast is made out to be a fearsome, terrifying creature that is Vladislav's nemesis for over 70 minutes of the film, when in reality the Beast is none more than an ex-girlfriend from a relationship that went out in a rather ugly fashion. Or when the film leads up to a tragic death of Stu, and minutes later the previous suspense and buildup was nullified by the fact that Stu ends up being okay after all. Even the more grotesque scenes where people are mercilessly killed end up somehow being humorous. The jokes in the film tend to be centered around the inappropriate actions and exclamations of the vampires due to the fact that they are living in a modern era despite being these ancient, archaic creatures that live thousands of years. Though of course it is hard to find comedy in absolutely everything that is said, the lines are delivered in a consistently spectacular manner. Though many people could find its content disturbing, if what you are looking for is 90 minutes of pure, dramatic ridiculousness, a full watch of What We Do in the Shadows should be one of your top picks.

  1. I'm really happy that you pointed out the development of the Beast. It's also sort of relief theory as we're anticipating an awful hideous creature, and it's just an ex.

  2. It's an interesting combination of deadpan comedy and a kind of situation comedy that puts much older people facing the modern world.
